Steak and Eggs Success Stories: Banjo Finally Nails It . . . Now I Want YOUR Story

Banjo Progress Pic

It really wasn’t that long ago that I chronicled my story using the steak and eggs diet for fat loss. While I had my ups and downs (a lot of downs, actually) I still managed to shed a ton of bloat and went from a 35” waist to 31 ¾” in just 8 weeks.

And truth be told, it was far from my most successful turn on the diet.

So even though I’d had better results in the past, I was pleased. But my blog was still brand new and, for the most part, my diet series went unnoticed.

Over time though, my articles started rising in the search rankings. More and more people began finding their way to my site and saw my results. Real results. Not those doctored up photos taken in contrast lighting. I didn’t shave, tan, or oil up for these pictures . . . so my apologies to those who were expecting something more akin to Men’s Health.

This was just my natural hairy self, in my bathroom, using my cell phone camera. With pics cropped a little too low for PG. It wasn’t pretty, but it wasn’t fake either.

Sure enough, people started to respond.

First, I began to get comments with questions. Then emails with questions. Soon, I was getting emails and comments from people who had started the diet and wanted to share their results.

Here are a few choice comments I’ve received . . .

From Maryanne: Hi Trevor I was researching the Steak and Egg diet on the web and came across your blog! After all the information I had read about the diet, your comments were the ones that made me decide to try it! Why because I like the way you write and you made me laugh. I have now been on the diet for 4 days AND lost 4 pounds!! Delighted and still loving my steak and eggs and since it is the weekend just cracked opened a bottle of red wine! Thank you and keep up the great blogs ”

From Don: Hey bro! I’m currently on week 4 of this challenge and seem to be losing a quarter inch every week.”

From Hail: Just an update….and thank you for all your advise….started on 1 May and to day 21 June 2013 have gone from a size 16 to a size 12 (comfortable). Not much weight lose (89 to 76) but lots of centimetres….thank you once again….”

And be sure to read all the comments from “jonnieveal.” That guy is entertaining and cool as hell . . . and fucking crazy too. I love it!

But if you pay attention to all the comments, you’ll notice a theme . . . lots of people starting, no one finishing. To be fair, people are always more prone to comment at the start of something while their motivation is still high. So I can’t say for sure that no one has completed the diet.

Nevertheless, this diet is fucking hard. As effective as it is, few people will ever see it through more than a few weeks. And it got me wondering . . .

Can anybody actually finish this diet?

Then it happened . . .

My first success story. Complete with pictures. Here’s how it transpired . . .

From Banjo: “Hi Trevor,

I was inspired with your work and I’d like to thank you that it worked for me big time. I was extremely skeptical at the beginning because of the amount of butter and egg that I had to consume. But then I realised two things:

– What have I got to lose? I’ll just go ahead anyway.
– Do more research if it IS safe…. what you don’t know will cause you trouble.

And in the end… I found out my answers. Unbiased research helped me gain the knowledge I required and I’m happy that I’ve dropped my waistline from 32-29.5 and still at the ideal weight… I’m happy to share you the results.”

And he did.

So here, in his own words, is Banjo’s story of success. And as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, the picture up top is proof of his tale . . .

“STEAK AND EGG? DOES IT FUCKEN REALLY WORK?!?!?!?!! Banjo, you’re full of SHIT

So I’ve been hiding for a 8-9 weeks and have been promoting my diet… I have had A LOT of skeptics ( and haters too) that its NOT going to work… or its unhealthy or… I shouldn’t be doing it… I decided at the time “FUCK IT, I’LL JUST DO IT”… “What do I have to lose???” In all honesty, I was EXTREMELY skeptical as well that its IMPOSSIBLE to work especially I’ll have to consume A LOT of steak cooked in TONS of butter and 3-5 eggs in one meal?! I said “WHAT THE FUCK?”… I learned from school that Egg’s alone is BAD for you if you consume more than one!!@#!@#! I asked myself… fuck I’ve tried EVERYTHING… I’ve tried six small meals… I FAILED horribly (first photo) …. I’ve tried Hydroxycut and ALL the fat burning shit you could think of… I FUCKEN FAILED.. and waste at least 150$ a month!!! duh?!

Reality kicked in:

1. My cousin, Dan, was RIGHT. He’s the one that introduced me to Ketosis a LOOOOONG time ago and I ignored it. He’s cut as fuck so HE MUST BE RIGHT.

2. Genetics. Not everyone is the same. (Vince Gironda).

Please be mindful that:

1. I work 50-60 hours a week because of my profession.

2. I have a lot of hobbies… A LOT…. (DO EPIC SHIT)

3. I have a kid, so obviously, I need to have a daddy daughter time.

4. My sleeping pattern is off because of #1

5. I do a LOT of project work in the evening. I’m like a BAT.

What did I do differently?

1. Heavily reduce my drinking to 95% – Yes, I am KNOWN to be a binge drinker. But I still DRINK once in a while and I get drunk QUICK! (wohoo cheap night)

2. Stop the protein shake. (Calorie Deficit)

3. Stay on the same regime and introduce ‘some form of cardio’… I do cardio, I have NO particular schedule… I just make sure I do either for an hour 2x-3x/wk: Swim, Crosstrainer or Spincycling)

4. I never changed my weight training (2x-3x a week), its still random same weights until now. But I made sure… I do upper or lower body. I don’t want to look like a BASEBALL BAT.

5. Take multi vitamins, vit c, vit e and omega 3-6-9… cheaper than bloody 100$ protein shake + fat burning pill every month! (David Wilky is my reminder guy)

6. CARB load on sat! Honestly, I look forward to weekends… cause I can eat anything and get to hang out more with my daughter…

7. Drink A LOT OF WATER. (Get yourself a camelbak thinggy, and leave it at your work)

End result? What did Learn?

1. I’ve dropped from +/-12 body fat (I think really I was 15%) to +/- 9%.

2. I have WAAAAAAAAAAY more energy NOW and I feel EXTREMELY positive all the time.

3. Self Actualization. I’ve always wanted to be like this since I was 16

4. I’m -2% away from my main goal. 6-7% body fat.

5. I felt so much younger than when I was 16.

6. I save money… A LOT. Than spending 15$ @ KFC/per meal for Dinner for two (nom nom nom)

7. Look forward MORE for the weekend! SERIOUSLY.

8. All my levels are PERFECT. Heart rate, Blood Pressure, Ideal weight, Cholesterol Levels.

9. Don’t give a fuck about your weight too much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Before I was 67-68kgs (first photo) and 64kg-65kg from the ‘mid’ until NOW. I’m yoyo-ing between 64-65 but I’m still losing fat. I think whats happening now is: Lost enormous water retention, gained mass, still losing fat.

10. I should’ve added a cup of salad in my meals for fibre. (Keto friendly ones)

I’m extremely busy (almost like a doctor really) but I still made it happened. If you think you can’t do it, kindly consider ME first, how I started and what I’m doing now. My ‘window’ for free time is quite short and unpredictable but I made it anyway and did one simple thing:

I CHOSE TO REACH MY GOAL and STICK TO THE MOTHER FUCKEN PLAN.

P.S. If I can, you can.”

Just plain AWESOME Banjo! And a big ‘ol motherfuckin’ thank you for sharing!

Next Up? YOUR Story . . .

That’s right. I’m looking for a few good stories to feature in upcoming blog posts. Surely there must be more of you out there, right? Or is Banjo the only one that’s seen this bitch of a diet through to the end?

Please prove otherwise . . . if you’ve given this diet a shot and were impressed with your results, then hit me up. Don’t let this be the only steak and eggs success story ever featured. I’m counting on you . . .

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • Real results . . . with pictures to prove it.

Detail any difficulties you’ve had sticking with the diet, how your energy levels have responded, how your health appears to be affected. The more details the better.

  • Anything else you feel is important to share. Anything . . .

This is your story . . . tell it well.

  1. Hey trevor! Thanks for blogging this article in your site! I hope my progress would help other people too! Especially the convincing part as well that this diet works and its so simple! Im still doing my steak egg diet but with some salads now :-) I’ll share my results nd reports what Ive done differently and what Ive discovered and llearned. So far so good theres a massive difference between 9 weeks and 11 weeks. I will get there! MANY THANKS TO YOU TREVOR!!! For new comers… If you think butter is bad? Theres a new 2013 study that it isnt! Honestly Ive consumed 3-4 blocks of butter (I cant recall the NZ standard size but i think its 1KG) and I shouldve have some kind of complication by now but I dont. To think I literally sleep deprived becaus of my work. ;-) Ill be in touch!

    • My pleasure Banjo. And thank you for sharing your story. I’m looking forward to your further updates . . . I bet those salads taste pretty damn good after 9+ weeks of steak and eggs. Let me know how it goes.

      Cheers!

  2. Damn this is cool shit.

Right now I am just scratching the surface of proper nutrition but I’m constantly educating myself and refining my diet.

Is the Steak and Eggs diet similar to the Paleo Diet? I’ve heard a lot of talk about that so I just started reading “The Primal Blueprint.” So far it’s incredibly interesting.

Good work Banjo! Always awesome to see people making incredible life changes!

    • Thanks Kevin. I think this is similar to CKD. To summarise my diet

M-F Strict Steak and Egg only (now with a cup of salad)
Saturday : FOOD BINGE CARB LOAD YOU NAME IT! (e.g. A box of Dunkin Donuts, 1 Quarter Pounder meal or KFC meal, 1L of Coke, A beer, A block of Hersheys chocolate in one day)
Sunday : So-and-so, I slowly re-introduce Steak and Egg either lunch or dinner then eat ‘something’ else on the other meal BUT NOT PROCESSED FOODS. I usually end up Frying chicken (whatever part of the chicken but my favorite is thighs) with butter. IF and ONLY IF I felt I’ve over done the Saturday. I do a 24 hours fasting.

Why I do the 24 hours fasting? Cause I notice my body ALWAYS craves for carbs on monday. Seriously craving it to the point I dream about KFC.

    • Steak and eggs are foods that fall under the “primal” food group (though some might argue that the eggs don’t belong). I’ve never read “Primal Blueprint” but I’m a fan of Mark Sisson’s website. I’m sure there’s some good info in there.

Also, check out “Good Calories Bad Calories” by Gary Taubes — it’s one of the most enlightening books you’ll ever read. It completely changed my view about what constitutes a healthy diet (and consequently my health and body composition improved dramatically).

      Cheers!

  3. YOU GUYS! Results are amazing but I wanna know – what happens AFTER YOU COME OFF THE DIET? (Today, caps lock does not equal anger – it equals INTRIGUE. And lot of it).

    • Hey Raz, I always binge when I come off the diet. Usually for a solid week or so. I can’t help it.

      Bloat right back up too.

But then I stabilize and start eating more along the lines of Paleo, Traditional, Real Food, etc. The bloat goes away over the next week and I can maintain or lose weight as desired.

The steak and eggs diet is simply a speedy way to shed fat. As with any diet, what happens when you go off it is entirely up to you.

      Cheers!

    • Razwanna,

My strategy was simple. I’ll try and simply it as much as I can.

      1. Steak and Egg is my means to: “get there”
      2. Steak and Egg is to “build the right habit”
      3. Mesmerize my brain and accept not to have “ANY CARBS If possible” on M-F or SUPER LOW CARBS.

On the 9th week, I’ve slowly changed my diet to something else, I’m eating chicken or fish or some salad or wot not and butter ofcourse is still there! YUM. I’ve “BUILT” a “HABIT” not to eat ANY processed foods UNLESS its Saturday then so-and-so on sunday.

No carbs or SUPER LOW carbs on “M-F” and check my Ketostix once in a while (THIS IS A MUST).

Saturday is a FOOD BINGE DAY!! Woohooo… Sunday is so and so.

Heavily reduce my drinking but I binge “once in a while” like once a month now as oppose to every weekend. I SAVE A LOT of MONEY. Wooohooo…. I really think this is the second BIGGEST factor of my beer gut!

Its not really a “diet” IMHO, its a “Lifestyle change”. To win this WAR. You have to think of it that way. It has a LOT of benefits. You have to get there to understand but everyone CAN get there. A lot of people who’ve made it said the same thing to me that there’s A LOT of benefits and I kept saying “before”, “Impossible, you’ll be the antisocial for instance” but seriously. I was WRONG. Sooooooooo wrong.

      :)

    • Hi Rezwana
I followed the steak and egg diet religiously until i lost the weight that I wanted. I am still losing weight, don’t follow the steak and egg strictly like I did when I wanted to loose the weight. I still carbo load every weekend and in the week if I am invited out eat whatever is being offered but mainly i eat steak and egg every day. Strangely not allowing myself to get sick of it as I know the benefits of eating it.
I am down to a size 10 now and am happy with where I am now for my height. Slowly introducing more carbs into my diet, but I seem to be doing good without them.
      Hope this helps.

  4. I just think Banjo is an awesome name. As for steak and eggs, it sounds good, but I think I’ll stick with more fruits and veggies.

    • How ’bout the “Steak and eggs and fruits and veggies” diet? Sounds like a winner to me.

    • Hahaha… Thanks Dan!

Actually trevor does have a point, I honestly would’ve done it like that on day one cause it doesn’t affect my ketosis as long as its not “tooooo much” fruits and vegies and “remain” intermittent fasting on M-F.

There’s Ketostix anyway :) Thanks Dan!

  5. Hi Trevor,

This is extremely inspiring stuff. It’s wonderful to read how the advice you’re sharing with the world is having such a positive impact on people. I don’t know much about dieting and your post has motivated me to find out more.

    Thank you.

    • Thanks Hiten!

I have to say, I’m pretty happy with all the feedback I’ve been receiving. Let me know if you have any questions regarding diet/fitness . . . I’ll be happy to answer them or point you to resources that will.

      Cheers!

  6. I am sure any diet will work as long as you stick with it and it’s about calorie restriction. As much as I love steak and eggs, I can’t see myself dieting on only that. Veggies, fruits, grains and beans should be an essential parts of any diet also. You can’t eliminate fresh produce with tons of vitamins from your diet and replace it with “dead food”. It’s not about weight loss, but staying healthy in the long run!

    • Yes I totally agree Elena. I always explain to most of my friends that everyone ‘can get there’ but the ultimate question is ‘who can stay long there’.

Any diet will work. As long as you stick to the plan and not deviate from it. Steak and Egg is a means to:

      1. ‘Get there’
      2. ‘Build the right habit’
      3. ‘Learn how to adapt from cutting off Carbs and Sugar’
      4. ‘A way’ of cleansing progressively.

For vegies, fruits and grains. I agree! that’s one of the lessons I’ve learned from Steak and Egg. I should’ve ‘added’ some greens because it doesn’t affect my ketosis anyway and that’s what ketostix are for.

If I could go back in time, I would’ve had the right amount of fiber intake than totally cutting the greens for 9 weeks.

For the ‘vitamins and minerals’ I agree. You can either have them in ‘supplements’ or through fruits. I have been taking during my 9 weeks. Multi-vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Omega 3 6 9. For obvious reasons, not everything is in Steak or Egg especially Vitamin C.

However, anything ‘too much’ has its obvious side effects. In terms of greens, I found that ‘sweet spot’ habit where I know now without measuring whats ‘too much’ fruits or ‘too much’ greens. They do have carbs after all. After 9 weeks of straight discipline, I have ‘built’ that ‘process’ and ‘habit’ already.

Repetition is the key to mastery.

Currently, I’m on super low carbs and zero sugar diet from Monday to Friday. I call it maintenance mode. Quite frankly, its a LIFESTYLE change :) now I’m used to this and loving it.

      • Great response Banjo! I agree with pretty much all of it (in regards to Vitamin C, however, see my own response to Elena).

I think what you’re essentially saying is that steak and eggs is a way forward. It’s a way to step off the train to Fatsville and reevaluate the path we should be taking. It’s a “reset” button . . . and we need to hit that fucker with gusto.

Because it’s only after we’ve hit “reset” that we can reclaim our health — and the life that comes with it.

        Cheers!

    • Interesting that you would use the term “dead food” when referring to steak and eggs Elena. I would think that all food is dead by the time it hits our guts. But I get what you’re saying. Fresh produce, however, is not a requirement in the human diet. At least not in the amounts commonly prescribed. Just take a look at the Inuit diet before western civilization creeped all over them.

      It was practically all meat.

And they were amazingly strong and healthy. You wouldn’t find cancer, diabetes, or heart disease on those hardy folk. Of course, the meat that they ate is a far cry from your standard hormone and antibiotic laced meat we consume these days. Not to mention they ate a lot of raw meat and cuts that westerners would find “off putting.”

And you’d be surprised at how little Vitamin C our bodies need when we restrict our carbs. Unfortunately, Vitamin C competes with carbs for uptake into our systems — carbs usually win. So we need more C when eating significant amounts of carbs than when we cut them out.

But this diet was never meant to be a lifestyle choice. It’s designed as an exceptionally fast way to lose fat in the short term. Nothing more. So it falls strictly into the “crash diet” category. Crash diets get a bad rap, but I don’t give a fuck. I diet when I need to lose fat. And I diet to lose it quickly. No screwing around.

As for a healthy eating pattern for life, I tend to agree that fresh produce should be a part of that. See my articles on the “Kill It or Grow It Diet” and Real Food. So I think we’re in agreement here. Well, maybe not about the grains and beans.

But then, differences of opinion are spice. Wouldn’t you agree?

      Cheers!

  7. Very inspiring, I have been trying to lose weight a long time now, great information here.

    Rgds,
    Amanda

  8. The steak and eggs diet sounds good. Do you only eat these stuff and red wine when you eat in this kind of diet? I wonder if I could be able to eat carbohydrates like rice and potatoes during the CARB load. And do you have exact fish oil brand that you are taking?

    • Hi Lynne,
I only eat steak and egg for 5 days straight, no wines cause it turns into acetate or sugar. I save this for Saturdays. On my cheat days, you eat whatever you want. Here’s what I often take and you’ll probably laugh :-)

      1. bars and bars of Hershey’s chocolates.
      2. 2 x Quarter Pounder meal!.
      3. Box of dunkin donuts.
      4. Eggs Benedict
      5. Some cider.

  9. How long does the challenge last and which steak sirloin porterhouse. .ect challenge accepted.me 270 pounds hight 6ft2in waist 42.

    • Till you get the results that you want. I did it for strict 3 months but I kept going for another 4 months.

    • Banjo’s got the right of it . . . the challenge lasts as long as you can. Most don’t last long. Eat whatever steaks you like best, but make sure they’re fatty. None of that over-trimmed extra lean shit. You need the fat for this diet to work.

      Good luck!

  11. natosha says:

I was wondering if this is possible do u think it would work as broken up into three meals. I can’t really go without eating every 4-5 hours. Also how much butter is allowed, I know alot but does it matter the exact amount. I mean could I do like say 8oz steak 2-3 eggs each meal wtih 3tblspoons of butter will this be too much?

  12. Trevor. When doing the Steak and Egg diet. Does the Steak have to be Grass fed and do the eggs have to be pastured?
